Meaning
Logical expressions govern the membership of a collection of users or devices by evaluating specific metadata attributes in real time. Dynamic group rules automate the inclusion and exclusion of identities based on properties such as department and location. They govern the population of security groups and distribution lists without the need for manual data entry.
The term stops applying when membership is managed through manual selection or static assignment by an administrator.
Attribute Logic
Membership statements compare user properties against a set of predefined conditions to determine if an identity qualifies for inclusion. For example, a rule might state that any user with a department attribute of Sales and a location attribute of London belongs to a specific team. These evaluations happen automatically whenever a user record is updated in the directory.
Synchronization Timing
Changes to an identity do not always result in an immediate update to the group membership. Processing delays occur while the system scans the directory to re-evaluate every record against the current dynamic group rules. In a large environment with fifty thousand users, the operation might take several minutes or an hour to complete.
Users might experience a period of time where they lack the permissions they need because the background process has not yet reached their record. This lag is a known property of automated systems that prioritize scale over instant consistency.
Resource Impact
Granting permissions through automation reduces the chance of human error during onboarding or department transfers. When dynamic group rules are correctly configured, a user loses their previous access as soon as their job title changes in the HR system. This process ensures that permissions do not linger after they are no longer appropriate.
